Successful Ezine Publishing - How to Turn Your Online Newsletter Into an Effective Promotion Tool
By Marion Ryan

An online newsletter, or ezine, has the ability to demonstrate your expertise, advertise your offerings and bring you in new business. By signing up for your newsletter, your subscriber has shown they are prepared to hear from you on a regular basis. You can easily attract clients with an online newsletter, it is just a matter of making your ezine an effective marketing tool. Here are some tips for ezine publishers to help you do just that:

1. A Strong Title -- With the overwhelming amount of emails we receive these days, it's getting harder to persuade people to open ours. Your newsletter and your subject line both need to be persuasive. I was once asked to subscribe to a newsletter called "Random Thoughts". My time is too precious to listen to someone's random thoughts! Your subject line can be crystal clear about what you're offering or, by contrast, intriguing enough to arouse curiosity, just consider it carefully as it is your 'hook'.

2. Valuable Content -- However big a fan your newsletter subscriber is, he will expect to receive something useful in exchange for the time he's giving you. Value, fortunately, doesn't necessarily mean a long article. It could be one short tip that will make your reader think, a genuine recommendation for a product or service or a short case study. Let your reader know that there is always an excellent reason to open your newsletter.

3. A Structure -- Plan what sections your newsletter should include and stick to that structure. Think of your favourite newspaper: you know where you will find the business section, the TV guide and the horoscope. Make things easy for your reader; a confused mind doesn't buy.

4. Promotion Box -- Talking of buying, don't forget your newsletter needs a section which promotes you and your business. It should remind people what you do and who you work with. Honestly, you'd be surprised how easy it is to forget who you are, especially if it's a month since you were last in their inbox! You might want to include a short testimonial here and will probably want to include links back to your website or blog where they can find out more about you.

5. Proof Reading -- However much of a hurry you are in, don't skimp on proof reading your copy and checking your links. To send out a newsletter with typos, poor grammar or "Dear Blank" is tantamount to saying "I'm too important and not professional enough to care about wasting your time." Why would anyone want to pay for your service if you can't get a simple newsletter right? It's always worthwhile checking those links too, mistakes are easy to make when you've copy pasted a link from elsewhere.

Your newsletter can be something your subscribers love seeing land in their inbox or just another email to delete unread. Using these simple tips will help increase the effectiveness of your ezine and make it one they will want to read themselves and recommend to others.
